Prestigious appointments to NIHR College of Senior Investigators

Professor James Larkin and Professor Gina Brown, BRC-supported researchers at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and Institute of Cancer Research, London, have been appointed to the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) College of Senior Investigators, in recognition of their outstanding contribution to clinical research.

NIHR Senior Investigator status is awarded to researchers on the basis of their research excellence, the relevance of their work to patients and the public, and its impact on the healthcare system. Senior Investigators are leaders in their field and play an integral role in developing research capability that can effectively address the health challenges faced by the nation.

The NIHR Senior Investigators are expected to champion the integration of patient and public involvement and play a leading role in the NIHR’s Contribution to Growth by attracting, developing and retaining a highly skilled research workforce.

Professor Larkin and Professor Brown were selected by an independent committee to join the 2020 cohort of 45 Senior Investigators and 16 Emeritus Senior Investigators respectively.

Professor Larkin is a Consultant Medical Oncologist at The Royal Marsden and Reader at the ICR, specialising in the treatment of melanoma and kidney cancer and the development of new targeted therapies and immunotherapies. He is also the Uncommon Cancers Research Theme Lead for the NIHR BRC at The Royal Marsden and the ICR. Professor Larkin’s four-year term as a Senior Investigator will begin on 1 April 2020, where he will join BRC-supported researchers Professor Johann de Bono and Professor Judith Bliss, who are currently serving their first term as Senior Investigators, having been appointed in 2018 and 2017 respectively.

Professor Brown, Consultant Radiologist and Professor in Gastrointestinal Cancer Imaging at The Royal Marsden, has also been appointed as Emeritus Senior Investigator, following two successful terms as a Senior Investigator.  Professor Brown’s research focuses on diagnosis, staging and assessing response to treatment for colon and rectal cancers, and gastrointestinal malignancies. She will join BRC-supported Emeritus Investigators Professor David Cunningham, Professor Mitch Dowsett, Professor Ros Eeles, Professor David Dearnaley and Professor John Yarnold
