The Royal Marsden and its academic partner The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) together form one of the top four centres in the world for cancer research and treatment.

Both institutions are located across two sites in Chelsea and Sutton and employ over 4,800 scientific, clinical and nursing staff with an annual joint budget of over £440 million.

Together the two institutions provide a highly active and effective environment for carrying out impactful translational and clinical research, with a critical mass of experienced internationally renowned clinicians and biomedical scientists engaged in leading-edge research.

Our Partnership

The two institutions work closely together in two main ways:

  • Translating basic science into the clinic

  • Training the next generation of clinical academic leaders

Our research is complemented by the fact that we have departments of physics and biochemistry and many of the ICR Divisions and The Royal Marsden Clinical Units have strong links, for example in the Radiotherapy and Imaging, Molecular Pathology and Clinical Studies divisions. There is also a very strong interaction between the ICR’s Cancer Therapeutics Unit (drug discovery) and the joint Drug Development Unit (Phase I trials).

In total there are 29 ICR consultants based across seven research divisions who hold honorary consultant posts at The Royal Marsden.
